Medical Entrance Examinations

Medical entrance exams are essential for students who aspire to pursue undergraduate courses in medicine and dentistry. The most significant exam for medical aspirants in India is:

  • National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET): Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), NEET is the sole entrance examination for admission into MBBS and BDS courses in medical and dental colleges across India, including government and private institutions.
  • NEET Exam Pattern and Eligibility:
    • Eligibility: Candidates must have completed 10+2 with subjects Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology with a minimum of 50% marks (for the general category).
    • Pattern: NEET consists of 180 objective-type questions, divided into three sections:
      • Physics (45 questions)
      • Chemistry (45 questions)
      • Biology (90 questions, split between Botany and Zoology)
    • Total Marks: 720 marks (4 marks for each correct answer and -1 for each incorrect answer).
  • AIIMS & JIPMER: Prior to 2020, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) and Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) conducted separate entrance exams for medical admissions. However, now these institutions also admit students through NEET.
